Sexism is the original oppression
Sexism is everywhere, in the media, in our homes, in our workplaces, and in the places where we go for leisure. So is racism, of course. But sexism came first. There’s a strong argument that the traditional “ideal” family model that western society is based on depends on sexism. What would happen if the wife and mother suddenly decided she couldn’t be bothered with unpaid labour to keep everyone fed, clothed and clean, and that she’d rather retreat to her writing shed or her potting shed? Sexism is rife in most families, whether we choose to recognise it or not. It’s impossible to escape. There are plenty of countries where black people or brown people are in all the positions of power. There are precisely no countries where women are in all the positions of power. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted by accusations of racism, which seems to be a favourite accusation levelled at women who dare to express feminist thoughts. Sexism came first, sexism is everywhere, and loyalty to women and girls is the way out of our predicament. Women and girls first, always and for ever.
